Transformation to Jazz by Anita Broady

Seventeen years ago, I thought that Hip-Hop was the only music that could make you move, groove, and excite you.  Jazz music was simply noise to my ears and something that old men wearing suspenders who sat outside all day with dusty looking rubber souled shoes tapped their feet to.

That off beat sound was like someone scraping their nails on a chalkboard until…..I married a true jazz lover and he took me to the famed Montreal Jazz Festival.

I was like a kid walking through Willie Wonka’s Chocolate Factory.  It wasn’t just the music, it was the experience of open air live jazz musical sounds filling the air.  It was smooth jazz, it was straight ahead, fusion and to hear it on an open stage changed everything.  Standing next to those folks tapping their feet, snapping their fingers, and shouting “Oh Yeah” was amazing and contagious and suddenly they didn’t look so old.  They looked like me at the time – young, vibrant, and excited about life and there were thousands upon thousands of those folks around me.  I asked myself, “what is this thing I have been missing out on”?  It was jazz my friends.

Suddenly I began to appreciate those sometimes off beat sounds, and the scatting, and the whole vibe. It was suddenly real cool to be a part of this genre. Music is universal and jazz is no different.  It is an international style of music that is promoted and loved in every part of the world.  One dictionary describes it as: “A style of music, native to America, characterized by a strong but flexible rhythmic understructure with solo and ensemble improvisations on basic tunes and chord patterns and, more recently, a highly sophisticated harmonic idiom. Animation; enthusiasm. To give great pleasure to; excite: To make more interesting; enliven.”  A true definition in my book.

When you experience music in a live setting I believe that it is a game changer.  When you experience live music in a festival setting with food, vendors, and thousands of people around you it DEFINITELY changes things.  It’s an experience that causes a shift inside of you.  That opens you up to really hear the music.  You wake up and hear the jazz.
