Pool maintenance is the most neglected part of owning a swimming pool; however it is very important in terms of one’s health and hygiene. Not only is unbalanced and unclean water not pleasant to swim in, it can actually make you very sick and give you annoying skin irritations and eye infections.

For this reason it is important to test your pool water regularly to ensure that the swimming pools properly sanitized and balanced.  The most important component of a properly balanced pool is its pH level.

Most swimming pool owners use chlorine as a swimming pool sanitizer to control the growth of bacteria and algae in the water. But for chlorine to work effectively, and to ensure that the water feels good, we need to continually adjust the pH to the recommended levels. It is important to realize that swimming pool pH levels are affected by the many impurities that find their way into the pool water including leaves, dust, cosmetics, perspiration, etc

Your swimming pools pH level is a logarithmic representation of how acidic or alkaline the water in your pool is at any one time. Ideally your swimming pools pH level should be between 7.4 and 7.6.  If your pH level falls below 7.0, then it is considered acidic. Acidic water can make your eyes irritated, itchy and red. It also affects chlorines ability to sanitize your pool.

Acidic water will also affect your pools plaster and equipment over time, causing etching and failure.   If your swimming pools pH level is too high, it can lead to scale and mineral deposits depositing on the walls and floor of your pool, which can stain it. If your swimming pools pH level is too high, it can lead to scale and mineral deposits depositing on the walls and floor of your pool, which can stain it.
