The American Medical Association has OFFICIALLY recognized obesity as a disease, a move that could induce physicians to pay more attention to the condition as educators and spur more insurers to pay for treatments. “Recognizing obesity as a disease will help change the way the medical community tackles this complex issue that affects approximately one in three Americans,” Dr. Patrice Harris, a member oif the association’s board. She suggests that a new definition would help fight against Type II diabetes and heart disease.
While I agree that obesity is a vagrant health issue in America, causing many serious health diseases and costing Americans BILLIONS annually… I challenge Dr. Harris to educate her comrades as to how they are going to define obesity? Are the doctors simply going to look on a age and height chart or will you mandate every doctor to have a BMI machine or better yet train them on how to administer a caliper test… Clearly there needs to be an immediate solution to this question before doctors mis-diagnose obesity. If not, what is coming down the road in 2014 will not be pretty…the IRS has already announced that their will be tax deductions for obesity treatments. The FDA has approved two new drugs for weight loss, Qsymia and Vivus. Doctors are already co-dependent their patients saying, “That they do not have full control over their weight.” So now we are going to allow them to have a tax write off!
The back door to this, which the government is NOT telling you, is that once diagnosed with the disease of obesity…you will be denied for future services over and over again that may save your life because of this diagnosis.
Be careful of what you wish for. Would it not be easier to educate the population on prevention and also mandate exercise before feeding into a co-dependent society, excuse the punt!
