If you are a West Chester native, when you think of La Difference Salon & Day Spa, the first thought that might pop in your head is, “Isn’t that where my mom goes?” LD Salon & Day Spa is no longer just your mama’s salon. This cutting edge haven for beauty recently emerged from a facelift to uncover new services, new stylists and is home to some of the beauty industry’s top talent in this region. Christy Cosgrove, owner and lead stylist, has over 20 years experience and holds the coveted designation of Nationally Board Certified Hair Colorist. Christy is one of only 6 stylists in the entire tri-state area to hold this level of certification. Leslee Stewart-Hunter is also one of the 6 holding this certification! That’s two in one salon! Wow!

Most recently, Christy received some very exciting news – she is now a L’Oreal Soho Academy Partner in New York City, Denver and Laguna Beach! Congratulations Christy!

LDrevisedlogoScaledLD Salon & Day Spa has always been a family affair. Christy’s mom, Mary Lou Enoches, founded the salon in 1990 and Christy’s husband, Dan Cosgrove, is the business operations manager. Christy and Dan recently shared with us the motivation behind the salon’s newest improvements, “We not only updated the look and feel of the salon and spa, and we also updated the logo to signal the completion of these exciting renovations to the community. You will spot the new design throughout the county.” Christy’s and Dan’s family and community roots run deep and strong in Greater West Chester and so do the roots of LD Salon & Day Spa. “Our improvements and the new logo simply reflect the progression of the attitudes and lifestyles of our guests and our team…while respecting our rich history.”

New Look

smilingfacesldsalonUpon entering the salon, you will notice the paint color, motif and decor have changed in many rooms but the warm, smiling faces to welcome you to a tranquil retreat will always be a constant at LD Salon. In fact, when you arrive at the salon, you are always considered a guest, not a client. Christy explains, “Each time you enter the salon we want you to feel like you are being welcomed into our home, not our business and we work hard to create and maintain that atmosphere.”

Specific changes to the salon’s services include the addition of Balayage. This highlighting technique offers an alternative to the traditional foil method. Balayage is a hand-painted system that produces a sun kissed dimension to your hair color, creating a softer, more natural look that requires less maintenance than foils.

The spa division of LD Salon & Spa offers over 40 different cutting edge and results-oriented skin care protocols. LD Spa has a new skin care peel menu for Express Peel treatments and Signature Peel treatments that will leave your skin feeling fresh, firm and wonderfully dewy to the touch. It leaves you just feeling good. LD Spa specializes in customizing your skin care experience. Some guests love the pampering that comes from a spa experience while other guests are focused only on the results – LD Salon provides both!

If you’re already thinking about summer, the spa can get you swimsuit ready with full body waxing for her and him…including Brazilian waxing for both sexes. Anna, the spa’s manager, and her team, Olga and Diana, are sought after by many clients for waxing, facials and skincare. Book your appointments now so you ready for summer when the warmer temps hit.

When did you know you know you wanted to be a hairstylist?

“As long as I can remember, I wanted to be a hairstylist. When I was a little girl, my mom was in the hair industry and I watched her all the time, fascinated by her every move. Eventually, I realized I wanted to follow in her footsteps.”

What is your favorite part of your profession?

“There is always something new and fresh about this industry. The fact that I can be creative and use my talents to create a style, makes coming to work not seem like work at all. I love making my clients happy and meeting new people every day.”

How do you like working with Christy?

“Christy is such an amazing mentor. I couldn’t have asked for a better person to work with. She has taught me so much throughout this past year and I continue to learn something new from her each day – not just about hair, but about life and people. I will carry these lessons with me through the rest of my career.”

NicHoldingBottlesWhat is your favorite style to give your guests?

I really love working with the curling iron or wand to give any type of waves or especially beach waves. Along with waves and curls, I really enjoy working with the round brush to produce a nice, flowing, voluminous style or smoothing style as well. Although not always a daily request, I absolutely love up do’s and formal styles.”

Do you have a particular client that stands out in your memory? Why?

“I had a guest come in the day of New Year’s Eve for a blowout. When I brought her back to my chair, we decided it would be a great idea try something new because she wanted to surprise her husband. We decided on a spiral curl because it was a style she never tried before. At her next appointment, she told me with delight that her husband loved the new look and she received a ton of compliments at the party. It makes me feel incredible knowing that I can make my guests feel great about themselves and give them a boost when they most need it – not only in styling but in all aspects of beauty.”

When did you know you know you wanted to be a hairstylist?

“Ever since I was a little girl I knew I wanted to be a hairdresser. Friends and family members would always get me Barbie dolls because I would immediately proceed to cutting and styling their hair until the hair was gone. Then I would grab another doll and start the process all over again. I would also recruit my Pop Pop to be a client in my make believe salon. At only 4 years old, I would perch myself on his shoulders as he would sit patiently as I wrapped his handsome, silver hair in my Nanna’s pink curlers. When I reached 1st grade, I made sure my friends were on trend with curled bangs and the requisite wave that, thankfully, soon went out of style. My official start in a real hair salon came at age 14 where I shampooed clients and booked appointments. I was hooked.”

What is your favorite part of your profession?

“The most rewarding part of the job is when my guests leave my chair feeling beautiful, happy and smiling. I love the man or woman that comes in when they have had a horrible day and vent for 2 hours. I pride myself on listening intently to every worry, problem, breakup, and, basically, whatever they need to ‘wash out of their hair’. They end up leaving it all in the chair and finish the appointment feeling happy, stress-free, and usually give me a hug saying, “You just made my day.” In actuality, they just made my day.”

What beauty philosophy do you bring to your chair?

“My approach is to help transform a guest’s self-image both cosmetically and psychologically. A lot of people come to me for advice for things beyond hair care and style. You go beyond the chair and hair – I care about my guest’s well-being and happiness. He or she will always have a great experience when they sit in my chair. I love what I do. Therefore, I will consistently have a great attitude and always push myself to learn more, increase my knowledge base and never stop learning!”

AmandaSprayHow do you like working with Christy?

“I can’t help but get emotional and tear up when I think about Christy and how much she has impacted me. Christy creates a positive atmosphere in the salon, making coming to work incredibly enjoyable. Having an educator in the salon is also a great advantage. She always has something bright and inspiring to say. Since the day of my interview, I have strived to embody the spirit, energy and professionalism of Christy. She is absolutely amazing.”

What is your favorite style to give your clients?

“Transforming hair color is my favorite part of the job. For the majority of my new guests, when they finally arrive in my chair, it is after months of searching for a new stylist. Their hair goes through many trials and tribulations from other stylist, creating a complex color calamity. I love the challenge of working through the problem and finding a solution that leaves my guest overjoyed and the peace of mind that they no longer need to search for a stylist who can bring out the best version of themselves.”

Do you have a particular client that stands out in your memory? Why?

“My guest of four years came in for her usually 6 week haircut. However, on this particular occasion, she requested I shave her head. She had been diagnosed with breast cancer and her hair had been falling out since starting the chemo treatments. The experience was very emotional and powerful, leaving a permanent imprint on my heart. I will always remember her bravery and strength in that moment as I picked up the electric clipper in one hand and held her hand with the other.”
