I love the winter, well maybe just December. I love the decorations and the hustle and bustle. I love thinking of the perfect gift. I love my birthday which, yep, you guessed it, is in December. I love the end of a year and thinking of all the things you’ve done and all the things you hope to do next year. This past December I was even lucky enough to be in London and Paris for a week with my best friend. So, really, what’s not to love?
On January 1st, I think alright let’s do it. Bring it on New Year. I’m ready and off to a great start. And then something unidentifiable happens… I wake up in the darkness of March, sad, tired and cold. The holidays are over, vacation is over, and one of the things that they want us to be excited for is the potential for it to be the coldest day ever since 1842 or something like that. Yippee. So, as I sit here with what feels like the 17th snow storm of the season coming tomorrow, I’ve decided to think of a list of things that will hopefully start 2014 on the right foot. Or at the very least help make this winter a little more bearable for you. Or at the very very least provide you with a few minutes of entertainment via my first attempt ever at “blogging”. Whatever that means. But I digress. So I present to you my not-at-all proven, unscientific, not in any way foolproof, humble opinion on the top 4 (since 3 is just too predictable and 5 is just too many) ways to show 2014 what your made of.
1.) Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize
Working in a salon one of the biggest complaints I hear every winter is… Everything is just so dry. So take a few seconds and put lotion on your body after you shower. Keep hand cream in your car and take care of those hands and nails at a red light. And don’t forget about your scalp and hair. Many people forget that our scalp is skin too, so, like skin it needs to be moisturized. Even if you have an oily scalp. A nourishing oil is perfect for the job. My two favorites are Eufora Beautifying Serum and L’Oreal Professionel Mythic Oil. Rub oil into scalp every day and it will provide moisture and protection from the elements without weighing hair down. And are you wondering what to do with that Christmas bonus or that check for 10 bucks that your grandmother from Florida gave you? Invest in a facial. It will identify and treat your skin conditions. Who wants pimples, dark spots, wrinkles, dry skin etc? Not me. And not this year. Good try 2014. What better way to start the year fresh than to literally be fresh faced and glowing. Which brings me to number two…
2.) Make time for the people you love
Now that you’ve taken care of some of your exterior be sure to nourish your insides too. And I don’t mean what you eat or how much you exercise. Both of which of course are very important, but really, who in 2014 doesn’t know they should eat well and exercise. Doing it of course is a totally different story. This coming from the girl who has been “gearing up” to join a gym for a few years now. So, stop being too busy for people. I truly believe that we are able to make time for the things that are important to us. So put down your computer and go throw the ball around with a child (I recommend knowing said child otherwise it gets a little awkward). You’re mom invites you to an impromptu dinner… go and bring her flowers and thank her. You’re BFF calls you after one too many glasses of wine and wants to discuss the meaning of life until 2am on a work night….listen and delight in the fact that you’re the one he/she wants to talk to. And also know that someday it will be you doing the calling and needing to know why exactly you don’t live on a beach. So stop being “just too busy” and spend time with the people you love. The people who have seen you at your ugliest and loved you anyway. The people that support you and tease you and make you want to strive to be the person they believe you are.
Do it loud. Do it until you cry. Do it until you have no idea what you’re laughing about. Do it until the entire room is laughing. Do it until you’re belly hurts. Do it so hard you snort. Do it until milk shoots out of your nose. Do it until strangers think you’ve lost your mind. Do it until people look at you funny. Do it until you literally can’t do it anymore. Just do it. As much and as often as possible. They say that people who laugh often live longer. I’m not entirely sure who “they” are, but I fully agree. If you’re lucky enough to have a life filled with laughter then you’re lucky enough.
4.) Try new things
Get through this winter and start 2014 off strong by doing something you’ve always wanted to do. Something that may scare you. Something you’ve been dying to try. Something you’ll be so glad you accomplished. And start small. Of course I would love to start my new year off by marrying prince Harry and having his little ginger babies but let’s be honest…London is just too far away to live. Yep. That’s the only reason why it won’t happen. He’ll be heartbroken. So, while its always good to dream big and have an idea of what you want to do when you win the 273 million dollar Powerball, try to come up with new things you want to try that won’t require millions or a castle across the pond. Try something attainable. Go see a movie by yourself, tell someone you love that you love them, rock some bright red lipstick with your pale winter (albeit newly freshened) skin, try sushi for the first time, plan a weekend trip to somewhere new, ask out someone you think is ( but who actually is not) way out of your league, wear leather pants even though your (gasp!) thighs touch, color your hair bright blonde even though its January, climb that mountain, paint that picture, knit that scarf. Just try something that makes you happy. I know it’s easy to get sucked into a life of sweatpants, Netflix binges and electric blankets in these cold winter months (I know from much experience and research), but try just a little to get out of your comfort zone. Put on some pants that require both a button and a zipper, do your hair, brush your teeth and go take over the world. One sushi roll at a time.
These are the things I’m going to concentrate on this year. It’s not always going to be easy and I’m going to cut myself some slack when a day goes by that I forget every one of these things. But all I can do is try. I hope that you find yourself kicking butt and taking names this year. Show 2014 what you’re made of. And you’ll all be invited to my royal wedding.
