The new health trend in Hollywood being used by big stars, like Gwenyth Paltrow, is oil pulling, otherwise known as Kavala or Gandusha. It is a traditional Ayurvedic remedy where oil is held or swished around in your mouth. Ayurvedic literature states oil pulling is capable of improving oral and systemic health, including a benefit in conditions such as headaches, migraines, diabetes mellitus, asthma, and acne, as well as whitening teeth.
There are two primary oil pulling techniques: Gandusha which involves filling your mouth completely with oil for 3-5 minutes and Kavala Graha which involves filling your mouth comfortably with oil for about 3 minutes and then gargled. Sesame oil, coconut oil, sunflower oil and ghee are all oils that can be used.
How does it work, you must be asking? When the oils mix with your saliva, lipids in the oil pull out toxins from your mouth, teeth, gums and tongue and usually turns the oil thick, viscous and white. Best done in the morning, when the mouth is said to have the most bacteria in it. Sounds great, sign me up! The down side is that some techniques can take up to 20 minutes of gargling!!
Scientific studies have been done to support the claim that oil pulling helps pull out bacteria and also with overall oral health. Ancient Ayurvedic health practitioners believed oil pulling can help with many health issues other than just in the oral cavity. Still to this day, holistic practitioners believe it can help with a variety of health conditions such as: migraines, reducing inflammation of arthritis, skin diseases, insomnia, allergies and detoxing the body of harmful metals.
Remember, before trying any new health trend always be informed and talk to your health practitioner with any comments or questions.
