Stop. Freeze. Now, take notice of your posture. Next, observe the posture of your friends and family around you. Did you just shift in your seat and sit up straight?
The popularity of smartphones and tablets are causing a back pain epidemic for us, but especially for our children and young adults. The disorder has become so prevalent that a new term has arisen. “iPosture” is being used to define pain in the spine caused by a ‘stooped body shape” or poor posture used while operating tablets, smartphones or laptops.
An alarming statistic recently hit the medical journals, finding 84% of the 18-24 year-olds admit to suffering from back pain in the last year. What is even more disturbing? This age group now loses more working days due to back pain than their parent’s generation.
Isn’t technology great? No, not when it causes you chronic pain and especially not when it produces negative effects on your long-term health. These concerns are especially relevant in children. The excessive use of these devices is detrimental to their developing spines. The ossification centers of our spines do not complete the final formation of bone until the age of 16-18 years old. Currently, excluding the time spent in front of the television, this age group spends 9 hours a day in front of a screen! In addition, children are far more likely today to be found hunching over a device on a sofa or bed instead of sitting with proper alignment at an ergonomically correct desk.
This generation would benefit from paying close attention to the basics of good posture, which starts with proper alignment of the spine, before it is too late. Strengthening the back and stretching the chest and shoulder area are two ways you can begin to battle this syndrome.
However, exercises are only a small part of the solution. Chiropractic adjustments restore proper movement in the spine where those critical iPosture muscles attach. Reinforcing proper alignment of the spine is imperative to obtaining good posture. At Advanced Chiropractic Wellness Center, we have a special protocol in place for iPosture disorder. Do not delay in having your children evaluated.
In a world where it seems like everyone is looking down, take a moment to look up and notice your posture and that of your children. Give your spine and your children’s spine a fighting chance with professional treatment from Advanced Chiropractic Wellness Center.
