For cycling fans, the fall and winter months provide time to delve into a different challenge; cyclocross. Cross, or CX as it is sometimes referred, is like cross-country on a bike. Imagine hairpin turns, muddy terrain, obstacles and times where the rider has to dismount and hoist their bike through the course, which is all of about 1.5 – 2 miles. Cross racers often have to be prepared for emergency repairs as the course can wreak havoc on a bike. It’s short, sweet and sassy, pretty exciting, huh? This year marks the second annual event hosted by cycling enthusiasts Shawn Carey and Bob Reuther. They choose to host the event on the grounds around Rustin High School in West Chester. This site will also be the location for the 2013 Cyclocross state championship ride.
As a way of remaining in shape for the regular cycling season, bikers of all ages take advantage of the opportunity to participate in cyclocross. The community, for cyclists and spectators alike, is what Shawn and Bob want to build in the Chester County area. This event, the proceeds of which go to the Rustin High School wrestling boosters, is a chance for the community to come together and is also a great opportunity for kids to get excited about cycling.
The Cross Classic is of course thankful for a few special sponsers that helped them last year as well; Piscitello Law Services, Otto’s BMW, The Fence Authority and Timothy Off.
The races begin at 9:00am and work their way from Cat 5 racers, to the heavy hitters in Cat 1/2/3 at 1:30. The kids’ race starts at noon and is FREE.
This event is truly a spectators dream. Expect anywhere from 1200 – 1300 riders. The race never leaves the grounds, no road biking for these Cross riders. The Rustin wrestling team will be participating in a bike wash at the race. Rustin High also has a special participant in Cat 1 racer Wyatt Stoop who is a former Rustin grad and recently a winner of the West Chester Criterion.
Shawn and Bob are hoping the event draws the attention of racers and promoters from all over the Delaware Valley. They have hopes to expand to other events in Virginia, DC and Maryland in the coming years.
